Hello there! I’m Akshat Thonangi. I study B.A. Mass Communication, Journalism Political Science, at St. Mary’s College (final year) (2016-19 batch). When compared to all the other educational institutions that I’ve studied at, since the beginning of my academic career, the experience at St. Mary’s College has been the best. When I finished my 12 standard, as a science student, I was almost convinced about pursuing an engineering degree, until I realised in retrospect, that I’m poor in math.
I still remember securing my admission in St. Mary’s, on the penultimate day, and that has been one of the best decisions of my life. The college has provided me with a magnificent platform to improve upon my personality (professional skills), by virtue of participating in various inter & intra-college competitions and not just that, I was also a part of organizing committees for multiple events (anchoring/MC, stage management, media relations & PR), thanks to our faculty who always encouraged us, an excellent Public Relations department and of course, an enterprising principal.
In 2017, I was selected by the United States Department of State, for a funded international student exchange program named ‘Study of The U.S. Institutes (SUSI) on Global Environmental Issues’, in the University of Montana, as well as Texas, Washington, D.C., United States. I was amongst the 5 participants selected each from Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2018, I was selected for another funded student exchange program in Communication, Media Science, by the European Union, named ‘Erasmus+ KA 107 Credit Mobility Project’, at Budapest Metropolitan University, in Budapest, Hungary. This was owing to a Memorandum of Understanding, between Budapest Metropolitan University and St. Mary’s College.
I had been recruited as part of Amazon.com’s ‘Work From University’ paid internship program, a ‘pilot project’ in India, for two consecutive years (2017-2018). I’m the vice-president of the college’s Vox Populi Club, a public speaking and leadership platform. I’m also the vice-president (founding member) of the Street Cause (NGO) Division of the college. Both these designations have helped me acquire a lot of knowledge, especially in terms of leadership and people skills. The journey has been sublime, just like how a comprehensive undergraduate course should be! I would certainly recommend St. Mary’s College, an institution that strives for excellence in academia and students’ hands-on experience, as the pre-eminent choice, in the state of Telangana.
