Before joining St. Mary’s College, I spent a year at a different university pursuing a Bachelor of
Business Administration (BBA). My experience there was dictated by a corporate-like schedule that required me to wake up at 8 AM and attend classes from 9 AM to 4:30 PM or even later. This rigid routine left little room for personal life or self-reflection, and it took me a long time to realize the negative impact it was having on my overall well-being. In contrast, St. Mary’s offers a structured yet flexible timetable, allowing us to finish classes by 1:30 PM. This newfound freedom not only fosters a better work-life balance but also enables us to engage more meaningfully with our studies and peers.
The behaviour of the professors at my previous university was another major concern. Many were indifferent, failing to learn students’ names and responding rudely to questions. This created a discouraging and unwelcoming learning environment. When we raised our concerns, the Head of Department dismissed our complaints, stating he was not particularly concerned but would “look into it as a favour.” In stark contrast, the faculty at St. Mary’s are genuinely supportive and approachable. They encourage open dialogue and are willing to provide extra help when needed. This nurturing atmosphere ensures that every student feels valued and heard, significantly enhancing the overall learning experience.
Academic stress was another significant issue I faced at my former institution. The lack of
standardized textbooks and inconsistent exam materials left many students confused and struggling to prepare effectively. In comparison, St. Mary’s follows a cohesive curriculum with a unified set of textbooks, providing clarity and direction in our studies. This consistency allows us to focus on what truly matters—achieving academic success without unnecessary confusion.
When it came to placement opportunities, my previous university fell short of its promises. Although it had a good reputation, the reality was disappointing, with limited support for internships and job placements. St. Mary’s, however, actively encourages students to engage in various activities, including academic writing, internships, and extracurricular events. This supportive environment fosters personal growth and prepares us for future success beyond the classroom.
Throughout my journey, I encountered numerous struggles, especially in dealing with the intense pressure of my previous university. This pressure often led to feelings of anxiety and depression. When I reached out to a professor for help, their dismissive response suggested that I simply needed to cope better. In contrast, at St. Mary’s, mental health is prioritized. The college offers dedicated counsellors who support students, ensuring our well-being is considered as vital as our academic achievements. This holistic approach creates a more balanced and fulfilling college experience.
In conclusion, my transition from a rigid, corporate-like university experience to the welcoming
community at St. Mary’s College has been nothing short of transformative. The differences in
academic culture, faculty support, and emphasis on mental health have profoundly impacted my college life. At St. Mary’s, I feel empowered to pursue my passions and develop as a well-rounded individual. The nurturing environment fosters not only academic excellence but also personal growth, allowing us to build meaningful relationships and connections that will last a lifetime. I am incredibly grateful to be part of a college that truly prioritizes student well-being and growth, setting the foundation for a bright and successful future.
